The Black Canadian Scholarship Fund (BCSF)

Press Release
August 11, 2006

The Black Canadian Scholarship Fund (BCSF) is pleased to announce the recipients of the 2006 bursary awards
in the amount of $5,000 each, to:

Randall Antoine &
Francoise Makanda

Randall Antoine is a graduate of the St. Paul High School and the second male recipient among the 15 students awarded bursaries by the fund, and the first recipient of the Founders Award. Randall has maintained First Class Honours since 2003 and, as an avid sportsman, has represented his school in baseball, handball, soccer, track and field, most notably placing 5th and 6th in the 100 m Hurdles in the OFSAA championships for two consecutive years. He has also been active in St.Paul’s art club and senior youth ministry. Committed as well to the community, he served as mentor and senior youth leader for the J-Crew 2 at Woodvale Junior High School for the past three years. Randall regards the award as: "an eye-opener and an encouragement for us youth to be good citizens and to contribute to the communities we live in." He plans to obtain a Bachelor of Science degree in Kinesiology at an Ontario university and later to become a Sports Medicine Physician with a professional sports team.

Francoise Makanda is the second recipient for 2006. Not only did this École Garneau graduate maintain an over 80% average in her Grade 12 year, she managed to hold two part-time jobs as well. She also found time for community involvement at Rogers Television in programs that serve francophone minorities and other ethnic groups, participating especially in the television show Francojeunesse. Following her dream and that of her parents for "une bonne éducation", Francoise, who is originally from Cameroon, has set out to achieve it in Canada through hard work, a lively curiosity and superior organization. With her 2006 award and her determination both to improve her academic performance and continue her community activities, Francoise plans to begin a Journalism degree at Carleton or Ryerson University.
